The greatest de-energizer for me as a pastor is legalism. I love what the Apostle Paul said in his letter to the Philippians, “ . . . continue to work out your salvation . . . for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” In my opinion the best way to deal with sin is to preach about how sin causes a separation from God. God is righteous and cannot associate with unrighteousness. I chose to preach God’s word and allow the Holy Spirit to do His work in the lives and hearts of the people I minister to. I preach and live a positive message of grace, hope and God’s love.
I have often remarked how fortunate I have been to have such a diversity of church experiences. I was raised in a Pentecostal home, attended a Charismatic Bible School, graduated with undergraduate and graduate degrees from a Baptist University and mentored by and Episcopal Priest. Over the years I have been blessed to minister to people from a variety of denominational backgrounds and have found there are really more similarities than differences. All in all I am comfortable in almost any setting. As a minister I live by two non-negotiables; Jesus Christ is Lord and the Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God.
